Typically, breaking news events will interrupt current non-news programming (or, for network newscasts, a countdown sequence will be displayed to allow station affiliates to switch over), and an opening graphic or a distinctive music cue will indicate the story at hand. Depending on the nature of the event, breaking news coverage may last only minutes, or continue for hours, days or even weeks. Similar reports are also known as Newsflash or Special report.
