Current News is a breaking news story that requires nationwide coverage and often requires networks to interrupt regular non-news programming, or in the case of a network newscast, pause it for the break. Often, the network will then run an alert crawl to allow affiliated stations to switch to its feed. Depending on the severity of the event, it may be followed by multiple reports that last for several hours or even days, and some networks will use lower thirds and other graphics to convey the urgency of the story. This type of reporting is sometimes referred to as Newsflash or Special Report. It was common in North America until the 1990s when 24-hour news channels began to air, when national and local news stories would elicit enough coverage to require nationwide interruption.
