Breaking news is a special event occurring that necessitates an immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a regular-length program) to report on its impact. Often, a distinctive opening graphic and music cue is used to signal the change in broadcast; this sequence is sometimes referred to as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report”. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, such breaks were generally reserved for events that evoked nationwide coverage or required multiple stations to interrupt their programming simultaneously, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. More recently, many networks have started to use an alert crawl or lower thirds during regularly scheduled programs for breaking stories, lessening the need for cut-ins.
