Breaking News is an interrupting of non-news broadcast programming in order to provide immediate coverage of a significant event that may require nationwide, and possibly international, coverage. A national network’s feed will usually pause its ongoing newscast and then roll into a countdown sequence, allowing network affiliate stations to switch to the breaking news feed (or at times an independent station’s live news feed). The breaking news report is usually followed by live commentary from a news anchor. Historically, only extremely serious events have required interruption of current non-news broadcasts, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
