When news breaks that is so important, it requires immediate national coverage, a broadcaster will interrupt non-news programming to provide a special report. This type of interruption is called a “breaking news” event or a “special report.” Before 24-hour cable news networks were common, breaking news events usually required an anchor to come out of the studio and interrupt regular programming, with the network signaling affiliates to stand by for the break in the network feed. Some networks, like NBC, now use a special ticker to highlight breaking stories during regularly scheduled newscasts, which lessens the need for cut-ins.
