When breaking news happens, the network will alert its affiliates to interrupt their regular programming and switch to a special feed. The network feed will usually start with a countdown sequence, and then the news anchors and their team will begin to broadcast live from a remote location. Depending on the severity of the event, the lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
Before 24-hour news networks became prevalent, breaking news interruptions were usually reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Occasionally, stations would run cut-ins during severe weather events that warranted immediate action.
