When a breaking story requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming, TV and radio stations usually use a graphic and a special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker to convey urgency. In the past, such break-ins were used primarily for emergency situations, such as tornadoes or land-falling hurricanes, and less frequently for other stories that would normally be covered long-form, such as a presidential assassination or a major war. The graphic and countdown sequence often begin with a distinctive music cue.
