When breaking news happens that warrants an interruption of regular programming, a station will typically pause its normal broadcast and alert its viewers to stand by for a special report. Depending on the severity of the event, the network may also issue an alert crawl over the top of regularly scheduled programing or lower third graphics. The report is usually introduced by a network anchor, and may be overlaid on the station’s logo in place of its usual station imaging promo or program reminder. Breaking news is sometimes called a Newsflash, but it’s more commonly known as a Special Report.
