Breaking news is an event that warrants interruption of a broadcast program, typically for live coverage. This is typically done on network television and radio, where the networks alert all affiliated stations to “stand by for breaking news.” This often includes a countdown sequence and a special graphic indicating that programming will be interrupted. Breaking news was historically limited to events of extreme urgency, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and to severe weather events that required immediate action, such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes, which triggered cut-ins or alert crawls during regular programming.
