Prosecutors release hotel selfies of suspect in alleged White House dinner attack

The new images show suspect Cole Allen’s alleged weapons stash, including a shotgun, a pistol and multiple knives, according to prosecutors. Three law enforcement officials tell NBC News investigators now believe Allen fired his weapon, striking a Secret Service officer. NBC News’ Gabe Gutierrez reports.

When a story is breaking that requires immediate nationwide coverage, a news broadcaster will interrupt regular non-news programming or, in the case of national network shows, the current episode and issue a “Newsflash” or a special report. The show will then pause, and the network feed will display an alert sequence to allow other affiliates to switch over. In some cases, station identification will be shown in a lower third. Depending on the severity of the event, the news report may last a few minutes or many hours or days. Before 24-hour news channels existed, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent or serious stories like the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, but these events continue to occur as well as breaking weather events.
