Breaking News is a special segment of a national television or radio network’s regularly scheduled newscast or other programming that covers current events that warrant immediate reporting. If the event is severe enough, a station may interrupt its regular commercial advertising for extended coverage. Alternatively, the breaking story may be covered in-studio, via satellite or through other means of communication. Some breaking news reports require the network to suspend its feed to affiliate stations so that they can insert their local identification during the break. This is known as a cut-in or a news flash.
