Trending

A breaking news story is a story that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, regular broadcasting to provide immediate, ongoing coverage of an urgent issue. The breaking news may be delivered through a newsflash, alert crawl, or by interrupting the regular program and using an on-screen graphic with a distinctive music cue. Often, lower thirds or other graphics will be changed to convey a sense of urgency. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions were typically reserved for highly serious events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, for which a special report was aired on television and radio.

This week: Michael Jackson’s former home in Los Angeles gets a new tenant, state auditors criticize California’s high-speed rail project and a Utah jury convicts Kouri Richins of spiking her husband’s drink with fentanyl. Plus, how Iran is using affordable drones to even the playing field in its war with the U.S.
