A breaking news story is a story that warrants an interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of national network newscasts, regular broadcasting to provide immediate, ongoing coverage of an urgent issue. The breaking news may be delivered through a newsflash, alert crawl, or by interrupting the regular program and using an on-screen graphic with a distinctive music cue. Often, lower thirds or other graphics will be changed to convey a sense of urgency.
