Breaking news is a report that interrupts current non-news programming (and, in some cases, regular newscasts) to cover a rapidly developing event. This type of reporting is common on 24-hour news channels, as well as some traditional television and radio networks, which have a reporter ready to interrupt their usual broadcast at the first sign of breaking news. The breaking news is usually covered in a special graphic opening, often with a distinctive music cue and accompanied by a countdown sequence that allows network affiliates to switch to the new feed. The report may also be accompanied by an audible sound effect or an alert crawl to convey the urgency of the story.
