Breaking News is a news report that interrupts regular programming (either non-news or, in the case of network newscasts, a regularly scheduled one) to cover an urgent story. It is commonly used for severe weather events, but also to cover other events that require a quick response, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It is sometimes referred to as a Newsflash or Special Report. It is often used to replace or in addition to the “Status Update” that is usually present on most national networks.
