Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, television and radio stations interrupted regular programming only for breaking events that elicited nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their schedules. This was usually done through an alert crawl or a “newsflash” graphic, and it could require the station to pause their network feed so that affiliates can join them at the appropriate time. Increasingly, broadcasters use a Special Report ticker during regularly scheduled programming to provide analysis and reduce the need for break-ins.
