Trending is NPR’s weekly look at the news that’s making headlines and drawing attention. A trend is a significant shift in popular opinion or sentiment, such as the public’s view of President Trump or support for new proof-of-citizenship requirements to vote. This week, we look at a controversial move by the Federal Reserve and a new law to protect victims of sexual assault. Plus, how drones that cost a few thousand dollars are reshaping wars around the world.

Breaking news is a report of an event of urgent interest, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required many television and radio stations nationwide to interrupt regular programming for live coverage. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news events usually interrupted current non-news programs or regularly scheduled newscasts.

For network affiliates airing national broadcasts, a break will typically include a countdown sequence, and the network feed will be switched to a special graphic that includes a distinctive music cue.
