Trending is a news story that is deemed so important by a major network that it warrants an interruption of regular programming. The network will alert its affiliates, telling them to stand by as they switch to a special report, and then usually will begin the segment with an open graphic accompanied by a distinctive music cue. Often, the news will continue for an extended period of time — days or even weeks.
