A news event that is so important to the nation that it warrants an interruption in current non-news programming, or sometimes even in a regularly scheduled newscast. Breaking news events are often signaled by a special graphic overlay, and the network news feed may also be paused briefly to allow affiliated stations to join in. Then, an anchor introduces the story and usually discusses it in some detail. Depending on the nature of the story, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey urgency. Before 24-hour news networks became common, breaking news was generally reserved for events that were so urgent as to require multiple stations to interrupt their programming, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
