Trending is a breaking news story generating widespread interest or public concern. These stories may be followed by networks or individual stations for sustained coverage (such as a special report or live feed) for hours, days or even longer periods of time. During this type of reporting, regular commercial advertising is often suspended for the duration of the event. The story is usually opened by a news anchor who welcomes viewers to the report or, depending on the network and event at hand, a graphic with a distinctive music cue may be used. [2] Previously, such graphic openings, known as newsflash or special report, were limited to events that demanded nationwide attention and required the interruption of programming (such as the assassination of John F.
