Trending is a feature in Current News that talks about the top stories of the day. The feature is usually presented by a news anchor and may also include analysis of the story by analysts in-studio, via phone, satellite or broadband (B-GAN). It may be presented as a cut-in during non-news programming, such as sports broadcasts or a regularly scheduled network newscast. It is often accompanied by an audio cue and an opening graphic, and is sometimes referred to as Newsflash or Special Report. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for breaking events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather events, which required a national response from stations across the country.
