Breaking news is a news event that is so significant or urgent as to warrant immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of nationally broadcast network newscasts, of those currently in progress). In the past, breaking news events were rare, and were usually accompanied by a “Newsflash” graphic, a special music cue, and a countdown sequence that allows affiliate stations to switch over to the network feed. The term “Special Report” has also been used to describe these types of news stories. Occasionally, breaking news is covered in longer-form with tickers during regularly scheduled programming, such as during severe weather events.
