A breaking news report is an event that requires a sudden interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of 24-hour television news networks, regularly scheduled live news broadcasts. Typically, network affiliates are asked to stand by, and the newscast pauses briefly to allow stations to join the feed. The network’s news anchor then introduces the report, often with a distinctive music cue or graphic to convey urgency. Previously, such breaks were rare and generally restricted to extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage requiring many stations to interrupt regular programming and air an alert crawl.
