Trending is a breaking news story, often with a sense of urgency. Depending on the type of event, it can interrupt non-news programming, regular network newscasts or even nationally syndicated shows. The interruption is usually signaled with a distinctive newsflash graphic and music cue, followed by a countdown sequence to give affiliated stations time to switch to the network feed and insert their station identification. Traditionally, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, but they are now commonplace at 24-hour news networks and their affiliates. Alert crawls and lower thirds may be used in lieu of or in addition to break-in graphics.
