Breaking News is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to interrupt non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts) with coverage of urgent breaking stories. Such reports can last for a few minutes or hours, or even days, depending on the story. The interrupt is signaled by a countdown sequence, a distinctive music cue, and a special breaking news graphics overlay over the station identification. The term is also referred to as Newsflash or Special Report.
