About Current News
Trending is a live, breaking news event presented by a television or radio network that requires the interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of national broadcasters, their regular network newscast. The network will usually begin the segment with an alert crawl that tells affiliates to interrupt their own regular programming, followed by a countdown graphic and distinctive music cue, and then a headline indicating the nature of the story being reported. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were generally reserved for extremely urgent or major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, though lower thirds and other graphics could be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
