Breaking news is a term used to refer to current events that are deemed to be of urgent importance, and require a breaking-news cut-in. This is a common practice in 24-hour news channels where there is a reporter available to immediately interrupt programming and report on the event at hand. In older times, breaking news was a rare occurrence, and only the most important stories would warrant such an interruption, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which required numerous stations to break away from their regular programming and run a newsflash or alert crawl. During breaking news reports, lower thirds may be overlaid and a distinct music cue is played to indicate the nature of the report.
