Breaking News is a term used to describe an event that requires the interruption of regular, non-news programming for live coverage. The interrupting of a newscast may last only a few minutes, or in extreme circumstances, it can continue for several hours or even days. In addition to the news story itself, networks usually insert analysis of the breaking news through reporters in-studio, via satellite, broadband (B-GAN), or through various other means. Depending on the urgency of the report, stations may also use an alert crawl or cut-in during regularly scheduled programs. In the past, this was restricted to only incredibly urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather, but is now commonplace for 24-hour news networks.
