When an event occurs that warrants a temporary interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of network news, regularly scheduled newscasts) to cover breaking news, it is known as a Breaking News story. A special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphic is used to alert viewers to the breaking news event. The news coverage may last only a few minutes, or it may run for multiple hours, even days, depending on the significance of the news event. Newsflashes and special reports often contain lower thirds and other graphics altered to convey urgency. Before the advent of 24-hour news networks, broadcasters were typically only required to interrupt programming for urgent breaking events such as a presidential assassination.
