Breaking News is a form of national network news coverage that interrupts current non-news programming, or, in some cases, regularly scheduled, ongoing newscasts. In the case of a breaking news event, the network feed will typically begin with a countdown sequence, alerting affiliates to stand by. When the event occurs, the station will break into live news coverage with a newsflash graphic and a distinctive music cue. The break usually includes a headline and the breaking news story, along with an animated, moving ticker for severe weather events. This was the standard format for breaking news coverage before the advent of 24-hour news networks, which have more flexible formats that reduce or eliminate the need for cut-ins.
