When a significant event occurs that warrants breaking news coverage, non-news programming may be interrupted (and in some cases, regular network and local newscasts) to run the special report. Often, networks will alert affiliates to stand by for the report and begin a countdown sequence that allows stations to switch to the network feed. Some networks use a graphic with distinctive music cues, and lower thirds may be altered to convey the urgency of the story. Before the rise of 24-hour news channels, these interruptions were rare and usually reserved for major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or other national tragedies that required nationwide coverage and prompted many stations to interrupt their own programming.
