About Trending
Breaking news is a broadcasting event that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of 24-hour cable and satellite networks, regular live breaking news coverage). It is typically marked by a special graphic overlay or alert crawl during regularly scheduled programing. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were generally reserved for events that would have a nationwide impact requiring stations on all major networks to stop their programming at once; examples include the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or landfall of a hurricane. Breaking news is often accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to switch over to the national feed.
