Current News is a term used by television and radio broadcasters when breaking news occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming. Normally, a national network’s feed will pause and will be replaced by a special report graphic with distinctive music cues to alert affiliate stations that the main feed is switching to a breaking news story. During the course of the break, network anchors may provide analysis about the story and its effect on viewers. Occasionally, these reports may be extended for multiple hours or days as news events continue to unfold.
This week on “Sunday Morning”: the love for three traditional Philadelphia foods, a dangerous journey into the Strait of Hormuz and how a booster could save St. John’s basketball. Plus, the new Louis Vuitton artistic director talks about his vision for one of the world’s most recognizable luxury brands.

Unless a story is considered so urgent that it must be interrupted during regular programming, networks usually only interrupt regular broadcasts with breaking news for severe and imminently dangerous weather events such as tornadoes or landfalling hurricanes. Other breaking news stories that might trigger a cut-in are riots, terrorist attacks and sudden celebrity deaths. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, such break-ins were generally limited to major occurrences that prompted widespread coverage and required all stations to interrupt their regular broadcasts at the same time.
