About Current News
When an event occurs that warrants immediate coverage and requires a break in the broadcast of regular non-news programming, it is known as breaking news. Such breaks typically start with a newsflash graphic and a distinctive music cue. In the past, such interruptions were rare, but today, 24-hour news channels often have an anchor on-call for this purpose and are capable of interrupting normal programming at any time. A specialized ticker may also be used to highlight certain stories of high importance, and lower thirds or other graphics may be altered to convey urgency.
In a special report, Hallie Jackson goes back to New Mexico to explore why Jeffrey Epstein’s Zorro Ranch wasn’t searched sooner. Plus, she looks at the long-term effects of the LIRR strike.
Until recently, only weather events were covered in this manner, with cut-ins during regular programming and alert crawls during live weather forecasts. However, in recent years, some networks have begun to use a ‘Special Report’ graphic during regularly scheduled programming to cover certain stories of high importance. In some cases, this can be done with less disruption than a traditional break in the broadcast. Whether or not this is effective remains to be seen.
