Breaking news is an urgent news story that requires a television or radio broadcaster to interrupt regular programming and air an alert crawl or other graphics, usually accompanied by a special music cue. Traditionally, such breaks were used only when an event was considered so severe as to warrant nationwide coverage and the need for numerous stations to suspend their normal programming; such events typically included tornado warnings, landfalling hurricanes, and terrorist attacks against the United States.
