Trending is where the stories that people are talking about now live. These are the ones that have the highest engagement on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Breaking news is an event that requires a complete interruption of non-news programming, or sometimes of regular, regularly scheduled network television and radio newscasts. It is also known as a newsflash, news alert or special report. Breaking news may be presented through a cut-in, an alert crawl or by using a separate breaking news feed. It is not to be confused with a weather alert, which interrupts programs for only immediate and ongoing severe weather threats.

Among the most serious breaking events is an act of war or a terrorist attack. Other examples include natural disasters (such as tornadoes or hurricanes), sudden and unexpected deaths, avalanches and volcanic eruptions. In recent years, some major networks have started to use lower third graphics and tickers to alert viewers when certain breaking stories are occurring during their regularly scheduled broadcasts. This has tended to lessen the need for cut-ins.
