Trending is a section of Current News that highlights stories and events that are currently gaining traction in the media or on social media. These stories are typically breaking news or have received significant momentum over a short period of time, and can be either positive or negative in nature. In addition to the articles themselves, this section also talks about what’s making waves on social media and in popular culture in general.
When a story breaks that requires the interruption of regular non-news programming, or even of a live television or radio newscast in progress (which is common with 24-hour cable and satellite news channels), a network will typically alert its affiliate stations to “stand by,” then start a rolling newsbreak with a distinctive newsflash graphic and unique music cue. The news break may last only a few minutes, or continue for hours or even days. In the latter case, the network will often integrate analysis about the developing story through analysts in-studio or via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means.
