Breaking news is an event or series of events that elicits immediate, urgent coverage on a national scale and requires the interruption of regular non-news programming, or in some cases, the network’s regularly scheduled newscast. Before 24-hour news networks existed, this type of interruption was reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. When breaking news occurs, the station identification for the network’s signal is overlaid at the top of the hour and the usual lower third graphics are replaced with a special break screen, often with an accompanying music cue.
