Breaking news is an interruption of non-news programming on radio or television, to provide immediate, up-to-the-minute information about a significant current event. Typically, a countdown sequence will begin during a regular non-news program to indicate the breaking story is about to take place; network affiliates will then switch to a feed from the news headquarters. A graphic and distinctive music cue are usually used to identify the story, which is often presented by a news anchor or other on-air personality. Before the era of 24-hour news networks, programming interruptions were reserved for events of extreme importance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
