When an event occurs that is considered urgent enough to interrupt regular non-news programming (or in the case of a network newscast, interrupt that program’s ongoing coverage), it may be broadcast with a special opening graphic or “Newsflash” or a separate segment called “Special Report”. These reports can last for just a few minutes or continue for hours or even days. Depending on the seriousness of the news event, it may also be necessary to suspend regular commercial advertising.
