Trending is a feature in which the latest stories, topics or hashtags are trending on the app. It is often used in conjunction with a newscast to keep viewers up-to-date on the latest information. The feature is also sometimes known as “Newsflash”, or “Special report” when it accompanies an event that elicits nationwide coverage and requires stations to interrupt their regular programming (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy). Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, interruptions to regularly scheduled programming were restricted to breaking news events that required an immediate response, such as severe weather or terrorist threats.
