When breaking news is occurring that warrants the interruption of non-news programs (or occasionally newscasts), a special ticker is displayed on screen with a distinctive music cue, and station imaging or regular program reminders are suspended. The news event may require only a short period of live coverage, or it may persist for multiple hours or days, in which case the ticker will remain on screen with analysis from on-air reporters and other sources. This type of news coverage is also known as a Newsflash or Special Report. Prior to the proliferation of 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were typically reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which prompted widespread nationwide coverage requiring many stations to interrupt their programming.
