Trending is a news segment on television and radio shows that talks about what stories are being talked about by viewers, fans or experts. It can be presented as a newsflash, special report or cut-in. Newsflashes and special reports are used to highlight urgent events that warrant an interruption of current non-news programming, or, in the case of network newscasts, an elongation of regular scheduled coverage. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, such break-ins were rare; such interruptions typically were reserved for major national occurrences, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. In these cases, stations would alert their affiliates to stand by and interrupt regular broadcasting with the special report using an opening graphic and distinctive music cue.
