Breaking news is the term used for a significant, urgent event that requires an immediate interruption of current non-news programming, or in some cases, regularly scheduled breaking news coverage on regular TV and radio networks. During such an event, the network will typically alert its affiliates to stand by and count down to the breaking news segment, which may include special opening graphics and distinctive music cues, and lower thirds that convey urgency. Such reports can last for a few minutes, or be sustained over hours and even days in some cases. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking news segments were normally reserved for events of national importance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, and for severe weather events.
