Trending is a current events news feed that highlights the most popular stories and trends across the country. When a story breaks that is of enough importance to require an immediate interruption of non-news programming or, in the case of network television, an interrupted newscast, a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic with distinctive music cue is shown on screen. In some cases, lower thirds and other graphics are also overlaid with a distinctive look to convey the urgency of the breaking story. This is especially common with 24-hour news networks such as CNN and NBC News. In the past, such break-ins were only used for extremely urgent news, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes.
