Breaking news is a television or radio news story that requires immediate coverage and interrupts other non-news programming, or regular ongoing live network newscasts. Broadcasters may announce “breaking news” with a distinctive music cue and a graphic, often accompanied by a countdown sequence for any affiliated stations to switch over from their current program feed to the network’s breaking news feed. In the case of extremely urgent or major events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, network news broadcasts were interrupted, with cut-in alert crawls or lower thirds used to convey urgency. In recent years, major networks have introduced “Special Report” tickers for certain breaking stories, lessening the need for a complete newscast interruption.
