Breaking news is a television or radio news story of an urgent nature. Traditionally, breaking news coverage was reserved for events that would necessitate an interruption of current non-news programming or a live interruption of regular network newscasts (particularly before the advent of 24-hour news networks). When this occurs, the network feed will be interrupted with a graphic indicating that a special report is about to begin, and station affiliates will be asked to stand by. In some cases, a breaking news event will warrant an interruption for several minutes or even hours or days, in which case the network may insert the special report into regular programing using a lower third or alert crawl.
