Breaking news is a news story that elicits such a high level of urgency that the normal non-news programming of a television or radio station is interrupted for live coverage. The term breaking news is used to distinguish this type of event from news flashes (also known as newsflash or special report) which are used for less urgent stories that only require short-form coverage, such as severe weather alerts. In the days before 24-hour news networks, national network broadcasters would interrupt regular programming requiring nationwide coverage only for very important events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
