Breaking news is a term used by television and radio networks to indicate a story of immediate importance that requires their broadcasts to be interrupted from regularly scheduled programming (including network-affiliated local newscasts). The breaking news is normally indicated by a countdown sequence, followed by a distinctive opening graphic and a special music cue, while lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered for added urgency. The breaking news report may last for a few minutes, or, as with the assassination of John F. Kennedy, continue for many hours or even days.
