Breaking news is also called late-breaking news, special report, or “news flash” and it refers to the most important story of the moment. It also refers to a story of global interest, often after a news organization has reported on it. The term is sometimes replaced by “just in” (as in the recent North Korea crisis).
The most prominent story in a newspaper is the headline, which is the boldest part of the centerfold. The headline’s job is to attract potential readers. Breaking news often has a prominent headline that includes music. Breaking news anchors introduce the story, and the lower thirds are adjusted to evoke an urgency. In addition, ABC’s newscasts pause before letting other network affiliates join the feed. And if the news story is important enough to warrant a “breaking” ending, a disclaimer is included.
Often, breaking news anchors will remind viewers of the network or local coverage of the event, and may continue to air the story until it concludes. However, when the coverage is complete, the network or station may move on to their next story. They may also cut back to regular daytime or late-night programming and resume when the coverage is complete. Despite the changes in television viewing patterns, one important change is the availability of digital subchannels for some of the most popular broadcast networks.
Breaking news can be short-lived and can last minutes, hours, or days. The longest-lasting news events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, can last days, or even weeks. In these cases, networks may integrate a story analysis that is later confirmed to be incorrect or incomplete. Broadband may also be used for long-lived coverage, and regular commercial advertising may be suspended. There are other types of short-lived news, such as local radio stations, where a local news station produces a podcast with an hour-long weather update.
