Breaking news is a term used interchangeably with “late breaking news”, “special report,” “news flash,” and “news flashes.” It is used to refer to an immediate, live story that captures the attention of viewers. Breaking news can also refer to stories that are not new, but are of a high degree of interest to viewers. Its use has become diluted due to 24-hour news channels and commentary, making the term redundant.

A national network newscast pauses and permits other affiliates to join the feed. Breaking news may include music to emphasize the impact of the story and the anchor introduces the story. Lower thirds may be modified to convey a sense of urgency. This pause allows the other affiliates to join the feed. Breaking news is typically a major story that affects society, but it can also refer to anything that has occurred in a particular area.

Breaking news can interrupt primetime programming. This can be especially problematic if it disrupts a highly rated show or an episode with little remaining time. ABC interrupted an episode of Scandal in April 2017 during the Shayrat missile attack. A local affiliate may then return to the network feed and/or join on a “long-form” “extended edition” later in the evening. Regardless of the situation, however, it is important to watch a broadcast network’s schedule carefully and know when to break for breaking news.

In recent years, programming interruptions have become more common. For example, the John F. Kennedy assassination was one of the earliest examples. Walter Cronkite’s coverage was particularly noteworthy. Today, 24-hour news channels are prone to interruptions. Nevertheless, it’s vital that a viewer knows how to keep up with the latest events and trends. In the meantime, we can take our news in smaller, localized increments.
